Life is indeed so much simpler as a child. One ‘sorry’ holds the key to fixing everything that is wrong with our little worlds; one hug after a rain of tears heals even the grandest of errors. Learning to say ‘sorry’ is such a vital chapter in discovering our way through our environment and the people in it. But seldom do we recognize the even grander error in this most innocent of moments; seldom do we pause to consider the deeper truth — sorry and forgiveness are not two sides of the same coin, and therefore one does not warrant the other.


Sorry and forgiveness are actually like chalk and cheese — they may look similar, but really they come from completely different worlds. Sorry is a response born out of guilt while forgiveness anchors in compassion, empathy and love. Sorry seeks suspension of guilt, while forgiveness looks to build bridges, embrace the adversary and bring people together in love.
